Mudra Kuan
Yin Statue
This
statue represents Kuan Yin in an androgynous form, embodying the noblest of
both masculine and feminine qualities. Kuan Yin has a rosary adorning it's
neck with which Kuan Yin calls upon the Buddha for succor. Kuan Yin is
seated on a Viswapadmasana or a double lotus pedestal. Kuan Yin is
seated in Dhyana Asana or meditative pose. In this position the legs
are crossed closely locked with the soles of the feet visible. All Buddhas
and Bodhisattvas are found seated in this position. Kuan Yin's hands are in
Namaste Mudra or gesture of prayer. In this gesture the hands are kept
close to the chest in devotional manner with the palms and fingers joined.
Kuan
Yin's crown depicts the image of Amitabha Buddha. Indian sutras tell how
Avalokiteshvara was born from a ray of light that shone forth from the right eye
of Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha
means "unmeasured splendor," "boundless light"). When born he was
holding a lotus and uttering the words:
Om mani padme hum
(Om, the jewel in the lotus), now a popular mantra meaning that the seed,
or "jewel," of divinity dwells in the heart of all beings. The lotus is
identified with the aspiring soul which, like the lotus, is born in the mire of
worldly life, rises undefiled through turbulent waters of mental and emotional
conflicts, and blooms in the light of the divine.
About Kuan Yin:
Kuan Yin (also spelled
Kwan Yin, Quan
Yin or Guan Yin), is known as the Goddess of
Compassion, and she is one of the most popular deities in all of Asia. Her name
in Chinese roughly translates to "The One who Hears the Cries of the World".
Many believe that she is the female representation of Avalokiteshvara, the
Tibetan and Nepalese God of Compassion.
As a Bodhisattva, she has chosen to put off her complete unexcelled, perfect
enlightenment for the benefit of beings everywhere, and will wait as long as
there is one being who is not enlightened.
