Tara was born from a tear
of the Bodhisattva of compassion,
Avalokiteshvara. She holds a very prominent
position in Tibet and Nepal. Tara is believed to protect all beings while they
are crossing the ocean of existence.
Here, Tara is represented in a standing or half-dancing pose. She is
dressed and crowned like a Bodhisattva. Tara's right hand is in
Varada
Mudra (boon-giving pose), her left hand is in Jnana Mudra holding the stem
of the
lotus on her left shoulder. Her hair is bound up at the back; her
breasts are full; she is adorned with inlays of coral and turquoise, her robes
are incised with floral designs. The piece has many semi precious stones
inlaid in the copper statue.
This is one of four pieces in our collection which was hand crafted by a
revered artist in the Newari artist community. Unfortunately, the
artisan has passed on.
