This impressive
sculpture of Shakyamuni is richly gilded and finely engraved. His robe is
expertly carved consisting of a meandering flower design and the story of the
Buddha’s life.
Shakyamuni is seated on a double
lotus throne, holding the begging bowl (patra) in
his left hand and extending his right in the
bhumisparsha mudra. The alms
bowl symbolizes the renunciation of worldly attachments. The bowl and the
patchwork robe, as worn by the Buddha in this sculpture, are two principal
possessions granted to a Buddhist monk.
His painted eyes impart a noble and commanding presence to the statue. The lips
are highlighted in red pigment. The front of the throne consists of petals. Similar lotus petal design and engraved motifs are common in fifteenth century
Tibetan sculpture. The alms bowl, Buddha and the base are all cast separately.
