"What
immediately drew me to this piece was the fine muted multi-coloured painting
which I had never seen in a painted copper piece before. This piece
was made by the same artist that made the masterpiece Garuda. I
particularly like the Yamantaka's face with his wild eyes and the
untamed way which he protrudes his tongue. This piece also has
inter-connecting pieces; the Yamantaka which comes off the bull, the bull
which comes off the man and the man which comes of the base. The arch
is also removable.
Brenda, Dharma Sculpture
The beautiful Yamantaka
statue is comprised of 5 separate pieces; Yamantaka, the arch,
the base, the bull Yamantaka dances upon and the naked man beneath the
bull. The separate pieces allow the artist to concentrate entirely on the
each aspect of the piece during casting. The piece is entirely hand painted
with soft, muted colors which is rare to find in Nepali Metal industry.
Usually only portions of the entire piece are painted. The paint adds to
the wonderful craftsmanship of the copper casting.
Yamantaka is also called Vajrabhairava. He is a ferocious emanation
from Bodhisattva Manjushri and belongs to the supreme Yoga Tantra. His
function is to subdue the Lord of Death (Yama). In the simplest form
of Yamantaka (as depicted here), his head is that of a buffalo. His two
principal hands hold a skull bowl and a chopper (Kartaki). The phallus
is erect with a red tip. He has a crown of skulls and a third eye. He
wears a belt of severed heads and steps to the right. His body is blue in
colour and he wears bone ornaments. Beneath his feet are a subjugated
bull and naked man.
