Lokeshvara Statue
Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, the "patron saint" of Tibet, is also
known as the Lokeshvara of the six mystical syllables: om mani pad me hum (hail
to the jewel in the lotus). All Dalai Lamas are believed to be
manifestations of this deity.
Lokeshvara is seated cross-legged on a beautifully decorated lotus pedestal.
He is in
dharmachakra mudra or
teaching gesture. In a princely manner,
he wears a crown bedecked with five jewels symbolizing the five Buddhas.
He has long hair piled high on his head while the rest flows down to his
shoulders. He is adorned with different ornaments including necklaces,
earrings, a diadem and so forth. The arch is decorated with
conch shells; a
symbol of the proclamation of the Buddha's teachings. The conch symbolizes the
truth of the Dharma.
The artist has placed the whole in beautiful colorful background which adds
profundity to the message of the sculpture.
