"What
immediately drew me to this piece was the fine muted multi-coloured painting
which I had never seen in a painted copper piece before. The details
of the piece are absolutely marvelous; from the third eye boring out of
Garuda's forehead, his stunning eyes with tufts of hair for eyebrows, his
magnificent crown, the garland of severed heads around his neck, his foot an
ankle bracelet to his large talon like toe. Then, I turned the piece
over and noticed its' true essence, the
back of the sculpture was full of details as well; finely painted coloured
wings, a lion, elephant and man found between them with two protruding arms
which circle out to the front. The piece is a technical achievement as
well because of all its inter-connecting pieces; the two wings, the Garuda that
comes off of the man, the ma n
that comes off of the base
and the arch but yet when put together the piece is solid."
Brenda, Dharma Sculpture
The Garuda is
comprised of 6 separate pieces; 2 wings, the arch, the base, the man Garuda
stands upon and the fine figure of Garuda. The separate pieces allow the
artist to concentrate entirely on the each aspect of the piece during casting.
The piece is entirely hand painted with soft, muted colors which is rare to find
in Nepali Metal industry. Usually only portions of the entire piece are
painted. The paint adds to the wonderful craftsmanship of the copper
casting.
Garuda is a man bird, the
vehicle of Lord Vishnu. In the Buddhist Pantheon, he may serve as the
vehicle for Amoghasiddhi. He is almost always represented as human,
except for large wings which fold out from his shoulders. In this
piece he is represented with the head of a bird.
