Wood Buddha Statue
This Buddha is in vitarka mudra also known as the gesture of discussion and
transmission of Buddhist teaching. This
gesture is also
known as sharanamagana mudra (the gesture of protection), it is more commonly
known in Tibetan art as the gesture of giving refuge, and this mudra may be made
with either the right or left hand. It is the common mudra of the eight
manifestations of Tara or Avalokiteshvara who protect from the ‘eight great
fears’. This gesture may be made with the palm facing upwards and outwards or
with the palm held downwards in the act of subjugating the object of fear. The
gesture of giving refuge may also be made with either the index, second, or
third fingertip touching the thumb to form a circle, with the other three
fingers extended upwards. The circle symbolizes the taking of refuge as the
union of method and wisdom, and the three extended fingers represent the Three
Jewels of the Buddha, dharma, and sangha as the objects of refuge.
Lord Buddha stands
on a double lotus base (Sanskrit: padma, kamala). The lotus, which grows
from the dark watery mire but is unstained by it, is a major Buddhist symbol of
purity and renunciation. It represents the blossoming of wholesome activities,
which are performed with complete freedom from the faults of cyclic existence.
The lotus base upon which a deity stands symbolizes their divine origin. They
are immaculately conceived, innately perfect, and absolutely pure in their body,
speech, and mind. The deities manifest into cyclic existence, yet they are
completely uncontaminated by its defilements, emotional hindrances, and mental
obscurations.
