"When I saw this piece, I was immediately enchanted by the rendering of his large hands and fingers and by his gentle looking face. "
Brenda, Dharma Sculpture

This beautifully hand carved Buddha statue is in the gesture of protection (Sharanamagana Mudra or Vitarka Mudra), more commonly know in Tibetan art as the gesture of giving refuge, and this mudra may be made with either the right or left hand.  It occurs as the common mudra of the eight manifestations of Tara or Avalokiteshvara who protect from the ‘eight great fears’.  This gesture may be made with the palm facing upwards and outwards or with the palm held downwards in the act of subjugating the object of fear.  The gesture of giving refuge may also be made with either the index, second, or third fingertip touching the thumb to form a circle, with the other three fingers extended upwards.  The circle symbolizes the taking of refuge as the union of method and wisdom, and the three extended fingers represent the Three Jewels of the Buddha, dharma, and sangha as the objects of refuge.

Lor
d Buddha is seated in Dhyana Asana also known as meditative pose.  In this position the legs are crossed, closely locked with the soles of both feet visible.  He is seated on a Viswapadmasana, a throne or pedestal where the lotus petals are arranged in a double row.  The lotus seat upon which Lord Buddha sits on symbolizes His divine origins.

Thi
s wood sculpture is a one of a kind statue, hand carved by the artists of Bali, Indonesia.
