Dharma Sculpture
Lord
Buddha is seated on
a lotus throne with his hands in the vitarka mudra or teaching mudra.
The vitarka mudra was the hand symbol the Buddha used while teaching his
disciples the Dharma. His fingers are slender and delicate. He is
seated in lalita asana, a pose of ease. His leg is pendant and resting on
a blooming lotus flower which is entangled by a base surrounded by meticulously
carved lily pads. The lotus upon which Lord Buddha rests on symbolizes his
divine origin. It represents the blossoming of wholesome activities, which
are performed with complete freedom from the faults of cyclic existence.
This wood
sculpture is a one of a kind statue, hand carved by the artists of Bali,
Indonesia.
