Wood Buddha Tree Trunk
This amazing
sculpture was hand carved from the trunk and root system of a tree.
There are two Buddhas carved into the tree, the Buddha in the upper section
of the tree is seated
on a lotus in lalita asana, a pose of ease with one leg pendant and resting on
a lotus flower.
Beneath his right foot is a beautiful blooming
lotus flower. Lord Buddha's gossamer robes lie naturally over his body
and cover his legs. His right hand is outstretched naturally to his
right while his left hand is held up to his chest. He has a thoughtful
countenance with closed eyes and well defined lips. His nose and both
hands are all a lighter shade of wood, this gradation is natural to the wood
because the closer to the outside of the tree the lighter the wood becomes.
The second laying Buddha located in the lower portion of the tree is
masterfully carved to incorporate the beginning of the roots of the tree.
His long legs are carved from the roots while his body is part of the
trunk. The Buddha's long body is lounging comfortably on lily pads
that surround the base of the sculpture. His right hand is in the
jnana mudra
or teaching gesture,
while his left hand is tucked behind him in
support. His face is delicate and peaceful. The face is entirely
a lighter shade of wood, which really brings out the beauty of the Buddha’s
face and frames it perfectly with the dark hair.
Surrounding the base are more beautifully carved lily pads and a blooming
flowers. Some of the roots are sanded down in order to make them
smooth. The back of the sculpture is left in a more natural state, the
knots of the tree are left raw which really adds a special dimension to the
carving.
Only master artisans are entrusted to carve tree sculptures because they
must use the natural curves and contours of the tree to create there vision.
The vision of the artist is apparent in how he chooses to place the
Buddha’s hands and how he elected to keep the natural knots of the statue
and incorporate them into the front portion of the piece. Rather than
making the whole statue smooth, he kept the knots in some places which
contrasts beautifully with the smooth surface of the carving. Overall
a magnificent sculpture!

sculpture is a one of a kind statue, hand carved by the artists of Bali,
