This
beautiful wood Kuan Yin is carved from the base of a green hibiscus tree.
As you can see from the carving, the wood is a light tan color on the outside
and becomes a beautiful shade of green towards the center of the tree.
Only master artisans are experienced enough to carve full tree carvings.
The artist must have a very keen eye in order to see the contour and shape of
the tree and bring life to it.
Kuan Yin
is beautifully showcased! Her face has a calming look of serenity and
peace. She is surrounded by an eagle over her right shoulder that is
seated in a beautiful canopy of leaves and bamboo, a dragon seated at her feet
and a devotee looking up at her in admiration. The whole sculpture flows
to the natural lines within the tree.
It took the artist 1 year to carve this stunning work of art.
About Kuan Yin:
Kwan Yin (also spelled Kuan Yin, Quan Yin or Guan Yin), is known as the Goddess
of Compassion, and she is one of the most popular deities in all of Asia. Her
name in Chinese roughly translates to "The One Who hears the Cries of the
World". Many believe that she is the female representation of Avalokiteshvara,
the Tibetan and Nepalese God of Compassion. As a Bodhisattva, she has chosen to
put off her complete, unexcelled, perfect enlightenment for the benefit of
beings everywhere, and will wait as long as there is one being who is not
enlightened.
This wood
sculpture is a one of a kind statue, hand carved by the artists of Bali,
Indonesia.
