Dharma Sculpture
This stance of the Buddha is commonly referred to as the reclining Buddha,
lying Buddha or dying Buddha. Lord Buddha is shown leaving his physical
form and passing into Nirvana. The Buddha is depicted
lying
peacefully as he
has understood that physical death is merely a transition to a transcendental
state. His physical body has been released from the endless cycle of rebirth.
The Buddha's long slender body is clothed in a Buddhist robe. His left hand is
long and slender and rests upon his curved hip. The ushnisha,
protuberance above his head also referred to as a topknot, symbolizes His wisdom
and openness as an enlightened being.
This wood
sculpture is a one of a kind statue, hand carved by the artists of Bali,
Indonesia.
