Simhanada
Avalokiteshvara or Lion Lokeshvara is seated
sideways a lotus on the back of a fantastic lion with deep red flames for his
mane. The beast has a tamed, whimsical expression. Both the
Lokeshvara and the lion are supported on a lotus pedestal. He is wearing a
crown and bedecked in the splendor of rich ornaments. Avalokiteshvara's
eyes are framed by heavily arched eyebrows and in a gesture of humility are bent
slightly downwards. He has a serene, inward looking expression with just a
slight trace of a contended smile. His right hand is extended in the
gesture of
giving refuge or
sharanagamana mudra, while the left hand is
holding the stem of a
lotus flower with petals blossoming next
to his ear. He sits in a relaxed posture known as lalita asana or the
posture of ease. His left breast is covered with the skin of a deer;
encircled with a white Brahmin string necklace.
Simhanada Avalokiteshavara belongs to the Kriya Tantra classification and arises
from the Simhanada Tantra. His primary activity is to remove sickness and
disease.
