This beautiful Shakyamuni Buddha statue also known as the Buddha of the Present
is seated in Dhyana Asana or Meditative Pose, also called Padmasana. In this
position, the legs are crossed, closely locked with the soles of both feet
visible. Lord Buddha is wearing a detailed carved monastic robe incised
with floral motifs and He is seated on a double lotus base also known as
Viswapadmasana. His left hand is in the
earth touching gesture or
bhumisparsha mudra, while his right is in
meditation gesture or
dhyana mudra.
The base of the
piece is sealed with a double vajra symbolizing the balance of the four elements
and harmony of the four directions. Located on the lower backside of the
base you will find peacocks and deer.
Peacocks are a symbol of openness and acceptance.
In Buddhism they symbolize wisdom. They
are said to have the
ability to eat poisonous plants without being affected by them. Because of
that, they are synonymous with the great Bodhisattvas. A Bodhisattva is
able to take delusions as the path toward liberation and transform the poisonous
mind of ignorance, desire and hatred into the thought of enlightenment or
bodhicitta, which opens colorfully like the peacocks' tail.
Particularly peacocks
symbolise the transmuting of desire into the path of liberation. Therefore
they are the vehicle of Buddha Amitabha, who represents desire and attachment
transmuted into the Wisdom of Discriminating Awareness.
Deer are often painted within
the landscapes of peaceful deities. Here they represent the natural
harmony and fearlessness of the deity's pure realm and the Buddha's first
teachings at Deer Park in Sarnath. Like the solitary rhinoceros the deer
is a symbol of renunciation, as in never sleeps in the same place on consecutive
nights.
