Statue
Green Tara is seated on a single
lotus throne in lalita ("playful") posture.
She is a beautiful young maiden. Her right hand is in
varada mudra because
she is quick to respond to the petition of those who seek her aid. She is
holding the stem of
lotus flowers in both her hands.
Green Tara is adorned with five jewels symbolizing the five Dhyani Buddhas.
She wears six different ornaments including necklace, earrings, bracelets, and
so forth, symbolizing her perfection of the six paramitas. Her left hand
makes the
refuge gesture by pressing the thumb and ring fingers together,
symbolizing the unity of wisdom and compassion; the other three fingers denote
the triple jewels, namely the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. She is
often known as the liberator who rescues beings from the eight great fears.
This depiction of Green Tara is common in
Nepali Newari sculpture.
