Aparmita or Amitayus, the
Bodhisattva of longevity or eternal life or the Buddha of Infinite Life, bestows long life and sets the devotee, who meditates, free
from all sins.
Amitayus is considered the samboghakaya form of Amitabha. Amitayus is
a
popular figure in the Tibetan tantric tradition. He is part of the same "family"
of Buddhas as Padma Sambhava, Avalokiteshvara, and the Dalai Lamas, all of whom share Amitabha
as their "father" Buddha. The exact relationship between Amitayus and Amitabha is complex and has evolved over time. According to some texts,
Amitayus, "the Buddha of Eternal Life", is often interchangeable with Amitabha, "the
Buddha of Infinite Light", especially
in southeast Asia but also in Tibet. Amitayus gradually acquired a separate identity in Tibetan worship as the Buddha for the
attainment of long life.
In India, Sanskrit texts mention the two
indiscriminately, but in Tibetan Buddhism the distinction is generally clear
both in its iconography and philosophy. Amitabha usually is depicted in
nirmana-kaya form in monastic robes, while Amitayus takes the sambogha-kaya form. In
samboghakaya form, depicted here,
Amitayus is cradling the vase (kalasha) containing
the elixir of immortality, ambrosia (amrita) in his hands and is
in
dhyana
mudra (meditation pose). Amitayus wears a diadem and royal ornaments and is
seated on a double
lotus base. In the back of the base are carving of the
8 auspicious symbols. Beginning at the top left and continuing to the
right are: 1) the endless or glorious knot, 2) the lotus, 3) the victory banner,
4) the treasure vase. Beginning at the bottom left and continuing right
are: 5) the wheel, 6) the golden fishes, 7) the parasol, 8) the
right turning conch shell
Amitayus Mantra is:
Om amarani jivantiyeh
swaha.
