Amulets
According to tradition, clay is transformed into a receptacle for sacred power
when it is impressed with an image of the Buddha, a deity or holy symbol.
In Thailand these amulets are referred to as "Phra". Phras are made by the
monks in certain Wats (Buddhist temples) to commemorate special events,
festivals, or an anniversary. For centuries, the monks have been crafting
these little treasures. They come in all shapes and sizes, but generally,
each Wat has its own style, shape and size. Creation of such sacred
objects, for use as votive offerings, relics or amulets, is to this day
considered a meritorious action said to generate abundant auspiciousness for the
maker as well as the owner. Whether it is used to decorate a wall, placed
on an altar or held close, the terracotta amulet can be revered as sacred object
and is undoubtedly a beautiful work of ancient Buddhist art.
